The NCAA 1,000 meter record lasted all but seven days. 

Highly-rated Georgetown freshman Tinoda Matsatsa, a sub-4 miler in high school for St. Andrew's Episcopal in Potomac last year, secured the NCAA record for the distance on Friday at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Virginia, clocking a finishing time of 2:18.05. 

It comes just over a month since Matsatsa's college debut, an 800 meter opener of 1:49.58 at Boston University that still ranks him among the top 15 college men at the distance, and a winning effort of 1:16.68 in the 600m, which currently stands as the NCAA's second-best time.  

Friday's performance, however, was his most significant, considering the 1K record had been broken by Texas' Yusuf Bizimana just the week earlier in Louisville when the Longhorn ran 2:18.10.

"That was an incredibly special night for Hoya middle distance running," Georgetown distance coach Brandon Bonsey said. "Setting an NCAA record is beyond difficult, but to do it as a freshman n the first time competing in the event is truly special. Tinoda is one of the best young talents in the world." 

Before 2024, the 1K NCAA record mark of 2:18.26 had stood since 2016. 

Matsatsa left his high school career as one of the top middle-distance runners in his class and the top 800m runner in the country. 

The famed Maryland prep finished the 2023 season with a U.S. No. 1 time of 1:47.61 for 800m and clocked a sub-4 mile in 3:57.21, becoming the first American Black high school athlete in history to achieve the honor.
