Grant Fisher Barely Misses American 5,000 Meter Indoor Record At BU
Grant Fisher set his sights on breaking Wood Kincaid's mark on Friday, but he came up just short at Boston University
Grant Fisher made an honest attempt at the U.S. American 5,000 meter record on Friday night at Boston University.
He came up just short, missing by a little over two-hundredths of a second.
But what a solo attempt it was.
Fisher, the current American outdoor record-holder in the 5,000m with a time of 12:46.96, hammered each lap with resounding consistency and was 0.23 seconds short of the goal, ushering home a finishing time of 12:51.84 at the Boston University Terrier DMR Challenge.
Woody Kincaid's record of 12:51.61 from last year stood pat for at least one more year.
The effort from Fisher came within the week of his last record, which came on Sunday at the Millrose Games in the men's two mile. While Fisher didn't take the tape in that race -- Josh Kerr downed the World indoor record in 8:00.67 -- Fisher did manage to follow with a new American indoor record in the 2-mile at the Millrose Games in 8:03.62.
So how's a five-day follow-up?
Fisher was right on pace through the 1,600m mark in 4:09 -- a full three seconds ahead of Kincaid's pace in 2023 -- and then was at 8:18 at 3,200m.
But he 26-year-old knew he would need something special over the final laps, and he went for it, offering a final 400m of 57.94 and a last lap of 28.57.
Puma's Patrick Dever was second in 13:04.05, while Jack Rowe was third in 13:04.75. Amon Kemboi was fourth in 13:06.30.
