2024 Mike Fanelli Track Classic: What To Know

The 2024 Mike Fanelli Track Classic is the 15th edition of the event, which began in 2008 as the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.

It was renamed in 2019 in honor of Fanelli, a three-time coach of the United States’ national team, a track & field historian and a member of the San Francisco State Hall of Fame. Fanelli died of brain cancer in November 2023 at the age of 67.

The event, which attracts thousands of athletes from more than 100 schools from more than 30 states (and Canada) may feel different as it runs for the first time since his death, but you won’t want to miss any of the action from Chabot College in Hayward, California.

Take this opportunity to watch some of the country’s top track & field stars compete in a variety of races and events.

The Mike Fanelli Track Classic originally was contested in one day, but in 2014, a second day was added to make time for a variety of events.

Because the facilities at Chabot College have lights, the distance races can take place during the evening when it’s cooler.

The two-day event will feature a variety of competitions on each day:

Friday (March 29) – 1,500 meters, 5k, sprints, hurdles, relays, discus, shot put, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Saturday (March 30) – steeplechase, 10k, 800 meters, mile, two-mile, DMR, hammer throw and pole vault.
