How Does The Diamond League Point System Work? Here's What To Know
Here's everything you need to know about the Diamond League point system.
Since being introduced in 2010, the Diamond League has been providing elite track & field athletes the opportunity to compete against the best of the best, while earning prestigious titles, prize money and global attention.
In order to become one of the leagueâs premier competitors and really cash in, however, athletes must commit themselves to the invitation-only 15-event schedule and perform well on a near-weekly basis from April through September.

Sure, an invitee can pop in for the occasional event and make a quick statement, but that likely wouldnât help much toward the season-long points list and a spot in the final event, which is where the athletes compete for the big money. Thatâs also not the best way to stay on the invite list.
Here's everything to know about the Diamond League point system and prize funds.
How Does The Diamond League Point System Work?
At each of the 14 one-day events, athletes compete in 16 disciplines, with the top performers across the season qualifying for the final event.
At the first 14 meets, the top eight finishers in each discipline are awarded points â the winner gets eight points; the runner-up receives seven points; third place takes six points and so on, with the No. 8 finisher taking one point.
After 14 events, accumulated points are tallied. Based on total points, the top six field athletes, top eight performers in the 100- to 800-meter events and the top 10 from the 1,500 meters and long-distance events qualify for the season-ending championship event.
At the final event, which takes place over two days, the uber-elite field of the yearâs top performers compete for 32 Diamond League titles â one man and one woman in each of the 16 disciplines.
Along with the coveted Diamond Trophy for each grand champion, the titlists also take home $30,000 and a wild card for the World Athletics Championships.
