7:10 a.m. - The television broadcast has started on WABC and ESPN3. We are about 20 minutes away from the start of the race.
Mile 1
Split: 4:58
2012: 4:28
We are off from Central Park! A few Japanese runners out in front with the early pack. Abdirahman seen there too. Right under five minutes for the first mile. Julius Artile is the early leader.
Mile 2
Split: 9:54
Pace: 4:57
Jason Hartmann is the first American. Bernard Lagat is pushing in that pack next to Juan Luis Barrios. Canadian Rob Watson up in front as well.
Mile 3
5K Split: 15:03
Pace: 4:51
There are 15 runners within one second of the leader Watson. Hartman is the first American in fourth. Ritz and Lagat running together, which should be interesting to watch for the rest of the race. Kipsang crossed the 5K in 15:05 for 17th in the pack. Pace starting to pick up.
Mile 4
Barrios has moved up into second and Lagat is sitting in 4th. Kip looks very comfortable. Very wide pack running together as they start to approach Times Square. One of the only times the heart of New York City gets closed.
Mile 6
10K Split:29:40
Pace: 4:46
Barrios still in front as the group of 17 continues to move through Central Park. Lagat in third at 29:40.44. Kenta Murayama is the first one to cross the 10K mark, but the pack is still wide. Stephen Sambu could be one to watch as he sits in 7th place. Ritz comfortably in sixth.
Mile 7
The pace has picked up as the runners head out of Times Square. Barrios and Arile are the leaders. Hartmann in the back of the first pack. Kipsang and Lagat next to eachother. Ritz sits behind Lagat. We are down to a group of about ten runners in the front.
Mile 8
Ritz is making a move as he is now up in front with Barrios as the men's pack passes the piers. Lagat still looking good as he sits on the leaders. A kick in the half-marathon? Don't count it out. Leonard Korir is behind the leaders as well. That would be two of the top four runners in the front making their debut. Beginners luck?
15K
Split: 43:53.52
Ritzenhein led at the 15K mark and just at the moment Wilson Kipsang scoops up and executs his race plan. He said he was going to make a move and now he is up in front.
Mile 11
Wilson looking so smooth. All alone. Ritz in second.
Mile 12
Ritz has fallen into third place as Kipsang looks to lock up a victory and looks in great shape for London next month. Does not look like he will get the course record today, but he is in full control.
Mile 13
800-meters left and Ritz is battling for second place. Kipsang will win it as he makes his way towards the finish line. Lagat is a minute and 11 seconds behind.
FINISH
Wilson Kipsang wins unofficially in 1:01.02. Dathan Ritzenhein in third behind Daniele Meucci. Leonord Korir makes his debut and finishes fourth. Lagat finishes 12th overall in 1:02.33. Hartmann places ninth and Abdirahman finishes 15th to round out the top five men. Props to Robert Watson of Canada, who led early and finished 16th.
