Mary Cain sets 5k National High School Record
The legend continues.
A week after Mary Cain broke the American Junior and National High School record in the 800-meter race at the Pre Classic in Eugene, Oregeon, the Bronxville junior adds another high school record to her resume.
Cain ran 15:45.46 in the 5,000-meter race at the 2013 Portland Track Festival besting the former National HS record held by Emily Sisson, who now runs for Providence College.
Cain achieved the USA “A” standard in the event by running under 15:46.00. According to coach Alberto Salazar, the goal at the Portland Track Festival was to simply achieve the standard in case anything went wrong in the 1500m at the U.S. Championships.
A quick look at the record books shows that Cain's run puts her 5th all-time in the U.S. women junior list. That record is 15:36.95, which is held by Molly Huddle from 2003.
While we're on the subject of making history, it should be noted that Cain now holds all high school records from 800m to 5k. Range, anyone?
Edit: Correction with the 800m. Between NCAA's and Portland, it was a very, very long day. - Mitch
