Mary Cain Withdraws From Birmingham GP
Mary Cain has withdrawn from this weekend’s Birmingham Grand Prix due to illness. The 18-year-old had originally been scheduled to join several of her Nike Oregon Project teammates in England for the IAAF meet, but has decided to not make the trip after a string of disappointing performances in the last few weeks. Cain became ill a few weeks ago, and has not been racing at full strength, according to her agent Ricky Simms.
The 2014 Wanamaker mile champion was a distant eighth this past Saturday in the Wanamaker mile at the Millrose Games, running 4:31.31 to finish nearly seven seconds behind winner and teammate Shannon Rowbury (4:24.32).
Fellow Nike Oregon Project athlete Galen Rupp has also been dealing with sickness this winter, and the Olympic silver medalist cut his indoor campaign short earlier this month.
Several of Cain's teammates are slated to compete Saturday in Birmingham. Mo Farah, Matthew Centrowitz, Shannon Rowbury, Jordan Hasay, and Treniere Moser will all be in the UK for what promises to be one of the most competitive meets of 2015. You can watch Birmingham LIVE ON Flotrack this Saturday.
