Yesterday, we saw Justyn Knight win his first NCAA track title, Karissa Schweizer defend her 5K title, Tara Davis set a world junior record in the 60m hurdles, Hussain Alhizam upset the reigning men's pole vault champion, and so much more.

Today's docket is highlighted by Josh Kerr's bid to become a three-time NCAA champion in the mile, Grant Holloway chasing his own NCAA record in the 60m hurdles, Schweizer going for the double in the 3K, and of course, the tight team battles.

Men's Mile | 4:10 PM 

Reigning NCAA champion Josh Kerr looked untroubled yesterday as he turned in a controlled 4:02 in the prelim to lead the finalists heading into today's race. All signs pointed to an outstanding performance in the DMR last night, but he pulled back and split 4:20 in what appeared to be a leg-saving tactic for the mile final. We'll see if that pays off today.

Kerr leads, but DMR hero Neil Gourley of Virginia Tech is right on his shoulder through the first quarter in 59.08.

Oregon's Sam Prakel and Reed Brown make a move to push up on Kerr through 800m in 2:01. 

With three laps left, it's Prakel, Kerr, Brown.

Going through 1K in 3:02, Kerr surges to the lead. Prakel is holding on, and Virginia Tech is making a huge move with two runners, Vincent Ciatti and Neil Gourley, surging behind Prakel!

Kerr has this one in the bag with about 150 meters to go, but CIATTI HAS OVERCOME PRAKEL!!! THEY'RE BATTLING DOWN THE HOMESTRETCH! Prakel is running out of steam! 

Ciatti has clinched the runner-up spot with a PR!

Women's Mile | 4:20 PM 

Rhianwedd Price-Weimer of Mississippi State turned in the top time yesterday, but Elinor Purrier owns the second-fastest time in the NCAA indoor mile: 4:26.55. Colorado's Dani Jones, who finished third in 2017, is also in the mix, along with Elise Cranny of Stanford. 

Purrier leads through 400m in 1:07, coupled with Jessica Harris of Notre Dame. Jones makes a move at the beginning of lap three to move into third. 

Nikki Hiltz of Arkansas cruises into the top three and is sitting comfortably with a little more than three laps left.

Purrier is looking confident with two laps left, and Harris is sticking on her! She ran AGGRESSIVELY yesterday (some might say too aggressively for a prelim), to secure her spot with a commanding win.

Cranny is making moves! She's cranking herself into fourth and trying to make up ground for the top three with less than two laps left.

Heading into the final turn, Jones is storming through the bank on Purrier's shoulder, but Purrier isn't relenting! Jones fought to get a step ahead of Purrier down the homestretch, but Purrier held her off to earn her first NCAA title! 

Now THAT is how you run a mile final. Pure guts on display.

Men's 60m | 4:30 PM 

2017 world championships-qualifier Elijah Hall of Houston has been on a roll this season, garnering comparisons to former NCAA phenom-turned-world-record-holder Christian Coleman now that he's finally healthy. It's his NCAA Championships debut, which is crazy to think about since he's been a powerhouse on the scene for a while now, but hasn't been able to avoid injury. 

He faces a tough field with familiar faces in Jaylen Bacon of Arkansas State and Demek Kemp of South Carolina, but also quick newcomers like Texas Tech's Divine Oduduru and Raheem Chambers of Auburn.

From the gun, Hall looks GOOD, but so does Chambers! They're almost stride for stride by the 40-meter mark, but Hall outleans him at the line! He has won his first NCAA title in his first appearance at this meet.

Women's 60m | 4:40 PM 

This race is all purple and yellow. LSU takes up half the field by occupying four spots in this final, and you can bet the finish will come down to two of them: Aleia Hobbs and Mikiah Brisco. 

Brisco and Hobbs are No. 1 and 2, respectively, in the Division I 60m this year with times of 7.10 and 7.12. Together in this final, they'll undoubtedly run faster than that. 

WOW. Hobbs is off to a tremendous start, but Brisco is right there. They're charging hard for the finish, and Hobbs has gotten there first! She has PR'ed and tied Hannah Cunliffe's NCAA 60m record of 7.07!

Men's 400m | 4:50 PM 

Keep your eyes on the two Auburn fellas in this heat, Akeem Bloomfield and Nathon Allen. These friends both hail from Jamaica, and Allen made his country's world team in 2017 and placed fifth! But he hasn't shown a return to that form since. His compatriot, Bloomfield, ran 45.02 this season, and seems primed to run sub-45 today. We'll see if Allen shows a spark today to go with him. 

Wow, Bloomfield is taking this one out FAST and is completely in control. He's joined up front by Allen, who's currently matching his strides behind him through 200m. 

BUT NO. Bloomfield will not be denied—he crushes his PR by finishing first in 44.86! Allen is second in an indoor PR of 45.27.

In heat two, hold onto your butts—it's time for the Michael Norman Show!!!! The sophomore from USC is taking the NCAA by storm, and should do major damage in this race.

Women's 400m | 5 PM 

The level of disappointment we felt upon seeing the heat sheets for this event cannot be overstated... 

Sydney McLaughlin and Lynna Irby will NOT race each other in the 400m or 200m finals.

I repeat: The two fastest women in the NCAA, who rank No. 1 and No. 3 in THE WORLD this year, will not face off in their freshmen debuts at the NCAA championships.

The 400m final, split into two heats, also split the top talents apart, with Irby headlining section 1 and McLaughlin leading section 2. 

McLaughlin and Irby set their world-leading marks at the SEC Indoor Championships when they went head to head in the 400m final, which saw them finish in 50.54 and 50.64, respectively. You can bet they'll both still run lights-out today in their separate heats, but it'll be tough to take down Phyllis Francis's NCAA indoor record of 50.45 without the benefit of close competition. 

Although we won't be able to witness these two sprint phenoms duke it out together, the final certainly won't be without drama. Irby will get to set the pace first, and McLaughlin, who is no stranger to high-pressure situations, will have to respond.

In heat one, it's Irby and Kendall Ellis of USC, who should not be ignored despite all the hype around the McLaughlin vs. Irby matchup. 

WHOA—hell hath no fury like Kendall Ellis!!!!!! The senior just took down Irby and BLEW THROUGH Francis's 400m indoor collegiate record in 50.34!!!!!!!

Now, the question isn't whether McLaughlin will be able to take down Irby's 400m mark, but if she can improve on Ellis's, which is the fastest time in the world this year!!!! 

McLaughlin got out strong, and ALMOST broke Ellis's NCAA record by crossing the line in 50.36, but Ellis's time will hold!

Men's 60m Hurdles | 5:10 PM 

Grant Holloway, the NCAA record holder in this event, couldn't have been more cool, calm, and collected during in the mixed zone yesterday. The dude oozes confidence, and you can tell he just enjoys competing. It's fun for him. And although he also enjoys the long jump, which he finished runner-up in yesterday, there's nothing he loves more than his marquee event. He should handily win here, but the second spot is up for grabs since NCAA No. 2 Reubin Walters of Alabama didn't make it to the final. 

WHEW. Holloway ate up the field, making it to the first hurdle first, along with the finish line.

But the real shocker is Nebraska's Antoine Lloyd, who finished second with a big ol' PR of 7.60! Ashtyn Davis of California followed him in another PR of 7.63.

Women's 60m Hurdles | 5:20 PM 

This event could produce a number of intriguing outcomes. Yesterday, Tara Davis broke the world junior record in this event with a startling 7.98 for second overall in the prelims, and Arkansas's Payton Chadwick led the final qualifiers in 7.93. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, another high-performance Edrick Floreal product, didn't get off to a great start yesterday, but still qualified in 8.02. USC's Anna Cockrell, who has also run sub-8 this season, qualified in third in 8.01, but hasn't been incredibly consistent this year. We'll see who can put the right pieces together today.

Chadwick runs another 7.93! You can't even try to be that consistent. Cockrell, who also bemoaned her poor start yesterday, finished second in 7.93 as well, and the photo finish went down to the thousandths. Camacho-Quinn also fixed her start in this race, but couldn't keep up with Chadwick and Cockrell after the final hurdle.

THREE ladies went sub-8. 

Men's 800m | 5:30 PM 

Barring any shenanigans, Michael Saruni of UTEP should claim this victory without much fuss. Isaiah Harris of Penn State is also here to party, but Bryce Hoppel of Kansas might play spoiler on the podium.

Early on, Saruni got into some traffic, but with a lap and a half to go, he peeled around the pack to floor it to the lead. Around the final bend, Harris made a move to challenge Saruni. He tried to overtake him, but with just the final turn to go, Saruni showed his hand and let everyone know he was completely in control.

Saruni claims the NCAA 800m title, and the meet and facility records, in 1:45.15.

Women's 800m | 5:40 PM 

Sammy Watson told me she's on the hunt for sub-2:00, and with her teammate Jazmine Fray there to push the pace, it's possible that they could both surpass that mark.

It's Watson and Fray in the lead for most of the race, but OUT OF NOWHERE there's a stupendously timed charge from Oregon's Sabrina Southerland with 150 meters to go!!! Watson and Fray aren't responding! Watson is holding off a late push from Ashley Taylor of NAU, but Fray isn't! And now, Watson is swallowed up by Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of Villanova down the homestretch! It's still all Oregon, and it will be Southerland through the line!

Men's 200m | 5:50 PM 

Can Elijah Hall once again find the magic he procured in the 60m earlier today? Or will the fast frosh Divine Oduduru be aching for redemption after finishing sixth in that race? 

Both Hall and Oduduru are eating up the stagger on the backstretch, and around the final bend, it's Hall and Oduduru! 

WHOA. ALL OF A SUDDEN, HALL FINDS ANOTHER GEAR WITH 50 METERS TO GO!!!! HE COULD BE IN SUB-20 TERRITORY!!!! WHAT IS HAPPENING!?!?!??

WOW WOW WOW. 

HALL IS YOUR AMERICAN RECORD-HOLDER. YOUR COLLEGIATE RECORD-HOLDER. YOUR MEET RECORD-HOLDER. YOUR FACILITY RECORD-HOLDER. THE HOLDER OF ALMOST ALL THE RECORDS.

Women's 200m | 6:00 PM 

It feels like all these record-setting performances are feeding off of each other and bleeding from one heat to the next. These competitors have to be jacked after seeing the 400m and 200m today. 

In heat one, keep track of Syd the Kid and San Diego State's speedy senior, Ashley Henderson. Camacho-Quinn should also be a factor. 

McLaughlin might be a bit tired after breaking Phyllis Francis's collegiate record, but falling short of Kendall Ellis's (and absolutely no one should blame her). She finished second to Henderson, who clocked 22.41 to McLaughlin's 22.80.

Gabby Thomas of Harvard ran 22.66 last night—can she upend Henderson's time to claim the NCAA title?

OF COURSE SHE CAN. WHY NOT?!?

Thomas took down Bianca Knight's collegiate and meet record of 22.40 with a time of 22.38! Irby is stunned again, finishing third in 22.55, which is a PR. 

Lately, it seems like you might not only have to break a collegiate record to win the NCAA meet, but possibly also an American record or world record. Jeez.

Men's 3K | 6:10 PM 

Lots to like here: last night's 5K winner Justyn Knight going for the double; Campbell Camel Lawrence Kipkoech; blue jean mile record-holder Dillon Maggard, who recorded the fastest mile split in last night's DMR (3:56); Big 10 champion Oliver Hoare; tried-and-true NAU seniors Andy Trouard and Matthew Baxter, who finished runner-up to Knight in cross country this season... you get the idea. Lots of really solid runners here, and it really could be anyone's race, to quote the legendary Meg Bellino.

Up until five laps to go, the pack was tightly bunched. With five laps to go, Kipkoech takes the lead. Shortly after crossing the line into the fourth lap, Cory Gilbert moved into third. 

With 600m left, they go through the line in 6:39. Maggard is in the mix for a podium spot, going wide to get around Knight with two laps to go. Gilbert is working hard to cover. Trouard is still in first on the rail. Knight is moving to take him! With a lap left, they're duking it out! Trouard is holding his ground, but here comes Knight! Around the curve, they're still running side by side! A bit of contact with Trouard and Knight, and they keep pushing off the final turn! Knight's legs look like they don't have much left, but Trouard is reeling in the finish line! 

It's Trouard!!! Then Knight! Then Cameron Griffith of Arkansas, who made a gusty move to crack the top three!

Women's 3K | 6:25 PM 

Knight couldn't make good on his attempt to earn two golds in the 5K and 3K today, but I'm betting Schweizer can pull it off. Last year, she finished runner-up in the 3K like Knight, but this year, she's armed with remarkable mile speed and all the burning determination from a cross country season that didn't go her way. Throughout indoor season, she's been a woman on fire torching everyone who attempts to cool her hot streak, and this race should be no different.

She's running this race just like she ran the 5K yesterday: out front. 

She's gapped the field, but Allie Ostrander's making a move with seven laps left to keep her in her crosshairs. 

Purrier looks tired from her mile-winning efforts earlier today (again, no one should blame her for this), and has faded to the back. She's completely out of the discussion that she only got a word into in the nascent parts of the race.

With four laps to go, it's Schweizer and Ostrander, and they've put a healthy 50-meter gap on the rest of the field, which is headed up by Ednah Kurgat.

With two laps left, there's 7:47 on the clock. It's STILL Schweizer followed by Ostrander. The Boise State sophomore isn't going to let her go without a fight! 

But Schweizer has just caught sight of the finishing curve, and turned on the afterburners, leaving Ostrander looking for an answer! Schweizer finishes first in 8:53.36 to successfully earn her 5K/3K double!

Schweizer is in elite company—she's now the fifth woman to win the NCAA indoor 3K/5K after Notre Dame's Molly Seidel, Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino, Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego, and Providence's Kim Smith.

Men's 4x400m Relay | 6:40 PM 

Here we go! This race has big team-battle implications—if the Florida men finish fifth or better, they'll clinch the team title! And USC could take down the world record that Poland set last weekend in Birmingham, U.K., at the 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships (3:01.77). They already own the collegiate record (3:01.98), and they definitely have room to grow now that Michael Norman has shown he's capable of 44-mid speed and three of his teammates have run sub-46!

Section 4

Texas A&M fans ROAR when they announce their Aggies. This is it... the section for all the marbles. Will Florida show out to clinch the men's team title? Will USC flex all over the field and smash that brand-new world record currently held by the Poles? Will the Aggies do something crazy in front of their home crowd? Could Houston find another gear after seeing Elijah Hall wreck the 60m and 200m today?

Shinnick leads for USC from the gun and into the final turn! It's still USC! He hands off in first to Benjamin, who's closely tailed by Grant Holloway! But he's tired! It's USC down the homestretch to stay in front as Holloway is overtaken by A&M! 

WOW. USC's third leg has cracked this race open! He's way ahead of Florida, who's regaining ground now down the homestretch, but it might be useless as USC hands off to the NEW WORLD RECORD-HOLDER, MICHAEL NORMAN! HE'S CHASING 3:01.98 AND 3:01.77!

AND THEY HAVE DONE IT!!!!!!! USC HAS DECIMATED THE COLLEGIATE AND WORLD RECORDS WITH A TIME OF 3:00.77!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE CROWD HAS ERUPTED! THE STANDS ARE SHAKING! THE PRESS BOX IS FILLED WITH STUNNED SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTORS AND THE FLOTRACK EMPLOYEES ALL AROUND THE TRACK ARE SCREAMING!

AND SOMEHOW, SOME WAY, THE TOP THREE TEAMS ALL WENT UNDER THE WORLD RECORD!!!!!!!!!

AND THAT'S NOT ENOUGH, IT SEEMS! THE PA IS TELLING US RAI BENJAMIN HAS SPLIT THE FASTEST-EVER 400M INDOORS! 44.35!

NOTE: As was the case earlier this season when USC dipped under the old 4x400m relay indoor world-record mark at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational, their time will not be officially ratified as a world record; instead, it will be classified as a "world best."

I'm still catching my breath and trying to regain composure after that men's 4x400m final... I'm glad this is the final event, because I'm not sure I can take any more of this. IT'S TOO MUCH.

A dicey handoff cost Alabama its position up front as Texas A&M took advantage and stormed to the lead on the second leg.

ALABAMA'S FINAL LEG DROPPED THE BATON HEADING INTO THE FINAL TURN! 

This propped the door wide open for Iowa and Clemson, who finished second and third, respectively, behind Texas A&M.

Section 3

Sydney McLaughlin's in this heat, and she must be a cyborg, because I don't know how she could still have power left in those legs. But then again, it's Syd the Kid. 

And, no surprise, she does. She turns in the fastest split of the section, 51.09.

Section 4

USC = Quarter-miler U! The women will bring home gold in the 4x400m relay to complement the one that the USC men won less than an hour ago.
