Forecasting The 2019 US Champs: Men's Sprints/Hurdles
The 2018 U.S. Championships just wrapped in Des Moines, but let's make some predictions about who prevails in next year's edition of the meet.
The 2018 U.S. Championships just wrapped in Des Moines, but it's never too early to look ahead to next year's edition of the meet. The 2019 championships will be back at Drake Stadium. This time, however, spots on the team for the World Championships will be on the line.
Here's an early forecast of which men's sprinters and hurdlers will make the squad for Doha:
Men’s 100m
1) Christian Coleman
2) Ronnie Baker
3) Justin Gatlin (Bye - 2017 World Champion)
4) Cameron Burrell
This team will be extremely hard to make even with the U.S. having four spots via Justin Gatlin's defending-champion bye. We expect Coleman to be fully healthy by next summer and Ronnie Baker to improve even more.
The last man in will likely be Houston alum Cameron Burrell, who, under Carl Lewis' training, could be a new mainstay addition to future men's U.S. sprint teams. Notably missing from our list is Noah Lyles, who we assume will opt out to focus on the 200m.
Men’s 200m
1) Noah Lyles
2) Elijah Hall
3) Christian Coleman
4) Ameer Webb
We believe the men's 200m team will consist of four men based on a projected 2019 Diamond League-victory bye for Noah Lyles. Behind Lyles, three-time NCAA champion Elijah Hall will be back on the track in his best form, Coleman will secure another team spot, and rounding out the top four will be Ameer Webb, your 2018 U.S. champion.
Missing from this list is Michael Norman, who we assume will opt out to focus on the 400m.
Men’s 400m
1) Michael Norman
2) Fred Kerley
3) Michael Cherry
4) Kahmari Montgomery
Just like the 200m squad, we believe a U.S. athlete (Norman or Kerley) will win the 2019 Diamond League final, ensuring a bye and a fourth team spot. Behind the obvious favorites, Michael Norman and Fred Kerley, we believe Michael Cherry will grab a spot along with Kahmari Montgomery, who will be coming off a strong 2019 NCAA campaign.
Men’s 110m Hurdles
1) Grant Holloway
2) Devon Allen
3) Aries Merritt
Jamaica's Omar McLeod will be hard to beat in the 2019 Diamond League final, thus the U.S. will likely only send three men to Doha. The top four men from this year's U.S. final should still be the favorites to finish top four in 2019, with Grant Holloway winning this time around and Aries Merritt out edging Jarret Eaton for the third spot.
Men’s 400m Hurdles
1) Rai Benjamin
2) T.J. Holmes
3) Kenny Selmon
4) Quincy Hall
By next year, USC's Rai Benjamin should have his U.S. status restored by the IAAF and win his first U.S. title and the 2019 Diamond League title, adding a fourth spot to the team.
Joining Benjamin will be T.J. Holmes and Kenny Selmon, with the last spot going to future South Carolina Gamecock Quincy Hall, who by the age of 19 has already run 49.02 in the 400H and 44.60 in the 400m.
