Analysis:
Two short years ago, the Furman women punched their very first ticket as a team to the NCAA XC Championships and finished seventh overall. After earning a 23rd-place team finish last year, 2019 looks like it’s shaping up to be something special yet again.
All seven women from last year’s squad (or “girl gang,” according to coach Rita Gary) return, led by All-American Savannah Carnahan, who placed 20th last year and clocked a 15:45 5K this spring. No. 2 Emma Grace Hurley, 51st last year, joined her teammate in the sub-16 club this spring with a 15:57. But perhaps the most improved athlete of the bunch is Gabrielle Jennings, who placed 141st last year at NCAA XC but shaved more than a minute off her 5K best to 16:12 and consistently ran under 10 minutes in the steeplechase, with a best of 9:47 and a ninth-place finish at NCAAs.
