Analysis:
The SUNY Geneseo men return four of their top five from last year’s 10th place nationals team, with their minimal turnover figuring to boost the Knights’ NCAA position significantly in 2019.
Sean McAneny made a huge jump last fall in finishing 24th at nationals, as he was just 123rd a year prior. A strong track season-- McAneny was fifth in the NCAA 3,000m, and ran a 3:47 1500-- further reflected a runner who has become one of the best in DIII.
To truly make the leap from 10th to the top five in 2019, Geneseo will rely on improvements from their three other scoring returners: Matthew Sayre, Bradley Farnham and Luke Holtzman. Sayre won the conference 10k and overall had a spring that seemed to foreshadow a top 40 fall.
The Knights will have plenty of competition to fill their No. 5 role, with Riley Grossman currently the leader in the clubhouse. Liam Higgins, a transfer from Binghamton, could also be a scorer in 2019 based on his high school credentials.
