Brazier Falls Short Of Gray But Wins Székesfehérvár 600m

The second stop on the 2020 Continental Tour went down on Wednesday in Székesfehérvár, Hungary. Here were the highlights:

It wasn’t close to Johnny Gray’s elusive 1:12.81, but in the absence of a record-breaking performance, the men’s 600m at the Gyulai István Memorial meeting was a great race between Donavan Brazier and Puerto Rico’s Wesley Vázquez. The 800m world champ rallied late to catch Vazquez and win in 1:15.07. Vázquez, fifth in the Doha final last fall, was second on Wednesday in 1:15.31.

Brazier was well off his own 600m best of 1:13.77, the world indoor best that he set in 2019.

In other action…

Noah Lyles began his evening in Hungary with an easy victory in the men’s 100m in 10.05. He did not  have a strong start out of the blocks, which likely kept the 9.86 man from cracking the 10 second barrier. The race was dealt a restart after Mike Rodgers false-started to Lyles’ inside.

A late add in his specialty, Lyles came back an hour after his 100m victory to take the men’s 200m in 20.13.

Grant Holloway couldn’t hold off a hard-charging Orlando Ortega late in the men’s 110m hurdles as the Spaniard caught the world champ at the line in 13.21. Holloway blasted out of the blocks and appeared well on his way to victory through nine hurdles, but Ortega— who won the Monaco Diamond League on Friday in a world-leading 13.11— pounced on the fading American and passed him two meters before the line. Holloway finished just a breath behind in 13.22.
