The women’s race was also arguably the most dramatic in the race’s history, pitting Adriana Pirtea of Romania, making her marathon debut, against Berhane Adere of Ethiopia. Pirtea, not looking behind, held a 30-second lead on defending champion Adere with two kilometers to go. Adere, seemingly coming out of nowhere, bridged the gap in less than 600 meters for the win, flying past a totally unaware Pirtea who was confident that victory was hers.
