This year, the high school mile belonged to New Yorkers as both the indoor and outdoor national titles for girls and boys went to the Empire State and each title was won with a furious kick. This week's KOW came down to the two NBN mile champs, Alex Hatz of Fayetteville-Manlius, NY and Emily Lipari of Roslyn, NY. Both races were tactical and came down to who had the best kick. Emily wins by a hair because with 250m meters to go, anyone who has never seen Lipari race might have thought she was out of it for sure, but she made up the gap and then some, winning comfortably. Her final lap was in 62 and final 200 was 30 seconds. Known for her monsterous kick, it is fitting that is how Emily would finish her final high school race.
