Feb 21, 2022
Colin Sahlman clocked a national record on Saturday, and the Newbury Park High School boys were at it again in the second installment of the Sundown Track Series at Azusa Pacific University.
In the final event of the night, Sahlman ran faster than anyone in high school history for 3,200m.
The Panthers senior and NAU signee produced a time of 8:33.32, which surpassed the former straight 3,200m record held by German Fernandez, who last set the mark in 2008 during the CIF State Track and Field Championships.
And he wasn't alone.
Teammates Leo Young and Lex Young were second and third, respectively, posting the No. 3 and No. 17 all-time performances at the distance.
Leo was second in 8:39.57 while Lex Young was third in 8:43.93. Newbury Park teammates Daniel Appleford was eighth (9:05.46), while Dev Doshi was 10th (9:09.40) and Hector Martinez was 11th (9:10.95).
Leo Young was only the third athlete all-time to go under 8:40 in a 3,200m race.
Clovis' Christopher Caudillo was fourth overall in 8:59.99 while Yerington's (NV) Kutoven Stevens was fifth (9:01.38) and Zack Munson was sixth (9:02.56).
