Kamworor’s 13:01, Felix’s 47.7; What's The Best Split Of All Time?

Two weeks ago, Geoffrey Kamworor rode a 13:01 5K split to his third consecutive gold medal at the 2018 World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia, Spain. Kamworor’s big move at the 15-kilometer mark blew the competition open, turning a close, crowded race into a one-man rout. Though the wind and course helped make that 5K section ripe for a fast time, it was still jarring to see someone run a time that could win a Diamond League 5K in the middle of a half marathon.

Kamworor, Gudeta Dominate Blustery IAAF World Half Marathon Championships

By David Monti, @d9monti(c) 2018 Race Results Weekly, all rights reservedVALENCIA (24-Mar) -- A mighty wind blew through this Spanish coastal city today, but it failed to stop Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor or Ethiopia's Netsanet Gudeta Kebede from dominating the 24th edition of the IAAF/Trinidad Alfonso World Half-Marathon Championships here this afternoon.  Both athletes sailed down the light-blue-carpeted finish straight in the iconic City of Arts and Sciences alone to win in 1:00:02 and 1:06:11, respectively.  Each athlete will collect the USD 30,000 first prize, and Gudeta --who told reporters that she prefers "Gudeta" to "Kebede" because it is his father's name-- will collect an additional USD 50,000 because her mark was a pending IAAF world record for a women's-only race. A total of 152 men and 117 women finished the race.

Bernard Lagat Is The Accidental Athlete At IAAF World Half Marathon

By David Monti, @d9monti(c) 2018 Race Results Weekly, all rights reservedVALENCIA (23-Mar) -- After turning 43 last December, two-time Olympic medalist Bernard Lagat did not think he would make another appearance at an IAAF World Championships.  Beginning with the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in 2001, Lagat had qualified for 11 world championships, both indoors and outdoors, and had won three indoor titles and two outdoors.  Although still competing, he was largely viewed as a "legend" athlete racing here and there for his own satisfaction in the twilight of his career.

American Citizen, Soldier, But Haron Lagat Can’t Compete For The U.S.

On Saturday, Haron Lagat watched from his home in Colorado Springs as his teammates Paul Chelimo and Shadrack Kipchirchir finished first and second in the 3000m at the 2018 U.S. Indoor Championships. Their performances meant that the two qualified to represent the United States at the 2018 World Indoor Championships. Like Lagat, Chelimo and Kipchirchir are members of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program and are stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado.
