The University of Missouri’s Karissa Schweizer has developed into the premier women’s distance runner in the collegiate system over the past calendar year, and when she boldly declared intent to double in the 10K and 5K at her final NCAA Outdoor Championships, her goal was to become the fifth woman in history to sweep both races.

Last week, I wondered if Missouri's three-time NCAA champion Karissa Schweizer had a chance to break Jenny Simpson's 4:25.91 collegiate record in the mile after the 5K specialist turned in a somewhat-shocking 4:27.54 run at the New York Armory.

Hey Karissa, With all due respect . . . What did you eat for breakfast last Saturday?! Did you just wake up and decide that leading the world in the 5K and setting the No. 6 all-time Division I mark wasn’t enough — that you also had to cut eight seconds from your PR to run the fourth-fastest indoor mile in NCAA history? And then you followed that up at the NYRR Millrose Games by knocking down Jenny Simpson's indoor 3K record in 8:41.60! What’s next? 800m? 10K? Long jump? Is anything safe from your reign of terror?

Karissa Schweizer of Missouri defeated Ednah Kurgat of New Mexico over 5K, 15:17.31 to 15:19.03, in the battle of NCAA XC champions at the BU Season Opener on Saturday afternoon.
