Three-time Olympic gold medalist Kenenisa Bekele has scratched from Sunday's Virgin Money London Marathon, organizers reported this morning. Bekele, 38, picked up a small injury in his left calf in the final weeks of preparation for the hotly-anticipated showdown between the Ethiopian star and marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya. The men are the two fastest marathoners of all time.

Not since the rivalry of Haile Gebrselassie and Paul Tergat has there been such a compelling marathon duel between a man from Ethiopia and a man from Kenya. Sunday's race, which will be run on a special, 19-lap course in St. James's Park and is only for elite athletes, has the feeling of a long-anticipated heavyweight boxing match.

Organizers of the postponed 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon announced today that the gala 40th edition their event would proceed as an elite-only race on a closed course within St. James's Park in Central London on Sunday, October 4. Organizers said that they would create a "secure biosphere," a contained COVID-safe environment, which would allow the race to be run on a small circuit, at least for top athletes. Citizen runners will only be able to participate remotely, running on their own.

As global life as we know it continues to be more and more restricted due to the coronavirus pandemic, the cancellation or postponement of any upcoming spring sporting events seems inevitable. So it is no surprise that the 2020 London Marathon, originally scheduled for April 26, has been postponed until October 4.
