Inside the Albuquerque Convention Center, everything appeared normal. Sprinters took practice starts, vaulters vaulted, batons were exchanged and coaches yelled to watch out in lane one.

Ten minutes before Harvard distance runners Kieran Tuntivate, Abbe Goldstein and Anna Juul were scheduled to leave campus for the airport to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend in Albuquerque, New Mexico, athletics staff informed the student-athletes that they would no longer be permitted to travel and were effectively scratched from the event.
It’s not hyperbole to say that the 2020 DI NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be the most unique in the event’s history. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, fans will not be allowed to attend this weekend’s championships (essential staff and limited family are the only exceptions), which will make for a somber competition in the cavernous Albuquerque Convention Center. Harvard has scratched their qualifiers as a precautionary measure, and overall a sense of uneasiness and caution has permeated the meet. Even with titles on the line, the coronavirus figures to be the main topic coming out of Albuquerque this weekend.

Harvard University is set to become the first school to prevent its athletes from competing at the 2020 DI NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, as sophomore Anna Juul announced on Instagram that the university president is forbidding athletes from traveling to Albuquerque for safety reasons.
